What is remodelling of bones?
Remodelling of bones is a continuous process that involves breaking of bone cells and formation of new cells. There are two types of bone cells- Osteoclasts and Osteoblasts. Osteoclasts breakdown the bone tissue, releasing calcium, while osteoblasts synthesizes bone tissue by depositing calcium on the bones. As age progresses the activity of osteoblast decreases. Hence the balance between bone formation and bone depletion is affected resulting in a decrease in the bone mass. This causes conditions such as Osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis affects approximately 25 million people each year. It is more common among women- 80% of patients suffering from osteoporosis are women.
